Matemático y lógico alemán, inventor de la
lógica matemática moderna y uno de los fundadores de la tradición de la
filosofía analítica. Enseñó en la Universidad de Jena de 1871 a 1917. Su
Begriffsschrift (1879, "Conceptografía) fue la primera presentación de un sistema de lógica matemática en el sentido moderno. Mediante una notación original de cuantificadores y variables, pudo dar expresión formal a oraciones que contienen cuantificación múltiple, como "Todos aman a alguien. Ello es imposible en la
silogística derivada de
Aristóteles, que había sido considerada completa hasta la época de
Immanuel Kant (
ver cálculo de predicado). En
Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik [Los fundamentos de la aritmética] intentó establecer la doctrina conocida más tarde como
logicismo. Hizo también significativos aportes a la
filosofía del lenguaje, entre ellos una teoría muy influyente acerca de la distinción entre sentido y referencia. A pesar de que la obra de Frege fue admirada por
Bertrand Russell y el primer
Ludwig Wittgenstein, la mayoría de los otros filósofos y matemáticos no la conocieron o no le prestaron atención en vida; su significación no fue apreciada de modo general sino hasta la mitad del s. XX.
